Iowa may be known for corn, but DesMoines shoppers make hay with a golden line-up of venues, from malls to historic shopping districts. The Woodsmith Store, on Hickman Road, ranks as the nation’s largest woodworking specialty tool store, with actual projects on display, along with a library, coffee bar, and Garden Center. Kaleidoscope at the Hub, a three-story downtown complex, offers more than 30 shops, plus several restaurants and food court. Merle Hay Mall, Iowa's first enclosed shopping mall, has Younkers, Sears, Old Navy, Target and Kohl's, plus 100 or so specialty stores and 6,000 parking spaces. West DesMoines’ 200-acre Jordan Creek Town Center, with a Residence Inn by Marriott, features 125 retailers in a two-level enclosed mall setting, including Younkers, Dillard’s, and Scheel’s All Sports. Southridge Mall, east of the Des Moines Airport, has Younkers, JCPenney, Sears, and a Pirtley’s General Store. Valley West Mall, anchored by Younkers, Von Mauer, and JCPenney, also has Charlotte Russe and Brodkey’s Fine Jewelry. Antique hunters head to Collectamania, on Delaware Avenue, or to the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall, carrying thousands of one-of-a-kind items.

DesMoines also showcases its roots for shopping: At Historic East Village, a non-profit organization works to create a thriving, attractive retail, entertainment, residential neighborhood environment. Historic Valley Junction, a renovated railroad district in downtown West Des Moines, teems with more than 120 retail businesses, including art galleries, fashion boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, and specialty stores.
